Consumer Rights Awareness Programme Held at KVR Govt. College for Women, Kurnool
Introduction
An awareness seminar on consumer rights was held at the KVR Govt. College for Women, Constituent College of Cluster University Kurnool, as part of the National Consumers' Day celebrations. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Consumer Affairs and Civil Supplies, along with the Department of Legal Metrology. The awareness programme aimed to educate students on how to respond when a consumer suffers a loss and to create awareness about consumer rights.
Event Details
Dr. B. Devikarani, Vice Principal of the college, presided over the seminar. The main guest, S. Nazima Kauser, Member of the District Consumer Dispute and Redressal Commission, Kurnool, spoke about how consumers are often deceived by low-quality products sold under the guise of discounts in the market and online. She emphasized the importance of obtaining a bill when purchasing any product, as it plays a crucial role in safeguarding consumer rights.
Speeches and Highlights
- M. Narayanareddy (Member, Consumer Commission) discussed the Consumer Rights Act, which was approved in October 1986 and came into effect on December 24, 1986. He explained how the act was simplified in 2019 to be more accessible to the general public. He informed the attendees that issues related to the quality, price, and purchase of goods can be resolved through the Consumer Forum within 90 days. Additionally, complaints can now be registered online, and digital hearings via video call facilities are available for convenience.
- A. Shiva Mohan Reddy (Member, Consumer Protection Council) highlighted various week long events and celebrations organized from December 18 to 24, including rallies, essay writing, and elocution competitions among different colleges in Kurnool district. Prizes will be awarded to outstanding students on December 24 at the Silver Jubilee Government College, Lead College of Cluster University Kurnool.
- Paramesh Kumar, Inspector from the Legal Metrology Department, educated students on different types of measurement and weight frauds.
- Parveen, Drug Inspector, informed students on how to identify generic, branded, and narcotic-related medicines. she stressed that no medicines should be purchased without a doctor's prescription, and narcotic-related medicines should only be used under a doctor's guidance. she also cautioned students to avoid using any medication without consulting a qualified doctor.
Outcome of the event
The seminar successfully educated staff and students on the importance of consumer rights and the measures they should take when encountering issues as consumers. The participants gained practical knowledge about the significance of bills, how to handle disputes, and the process of registering complaints online. The event also highlighted the need for vigilance against fraud in measurements and medications.
Closing Remarks
Smt.B Krishnaveni, Head of the Commerce Department, expressed gratitude to the district officials and the college management for organizing the programme. She remarked that this event provided practical knowledge to the students about consumer rights. The event concluded with the National Anthem, instilling high values and a sense of national pride among the attendees.
